Weekly Nutrition Tip #25
Tip #25
The Critical Meal
by Dr. John Berardi
Breakfast is a critical meal. After a catabolic overnight fast, a balanced breakfast helps to regulate blood sugar, helps to regulate energy balance, and helps to control late-day cravings that lead to overfeeding. Be sure to include a serving or two of lean protein like an egg white omelet (throw in a yolk or two), some cheese, some dairy like plain yogurt or cottage cheese, some lean turkey bacon or sausage, or even a protein shake on the side. Men should be shooting for 30-50 grams of protein and women should be shooting for 20-40 grams of protein in this meal.

Dr. Berardi– I love this tip and wholeheartedly agree!! For my patients and me, it is all about eating 5 to 6 reasonable meals per day– and making sure that the first one is your first real “activity” of the day. The machine must be fueled. And, the fuel must be a notable amount of protein (for durable and dependable energy… and to jumpstart your metabolism). You must eat breakfast before you can do ANYTHING effectively. If you do not eat breakfast to break the nighttime cycle, your body also thinks that you are still “fasting” and you are metabolically inefficient– conserving fat, instead of mobilizing (releasing) it. So, thanks for promoting this and getting the word out there! Let me know if I can help at any time. I love your site. Be well and thanks, Michael A. Snyder, Md, FACS, PC
