Trans Fat May Increase Breast Cancer Risk

European researchers have discovered that trans-fats may increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

Veronique Chajes of the French national scientific research center at the University of Paris-South and colleagues studied women taking part in a large European cancer trial.

Trans fat is a type of unsaturated fat with trans- isomer fatty acids. Most trans fats are artificially created by partially hydrogenating plant oils.

To perform their research, the scientists examined blood samples collected between 1995 and 1998 from 25,000 women who volunteered to report their eating and lifestyle habits and then be followed for years to observe if they developed cancer.

They also studied 363 women that had breast cancer and compared their blood levels of fatty acids to those of women without cancer.

The researchers found that women with the highest blood levels of trans-fats had approximately twice the risk of breast cancer when compared to women with the lowest levels. They also discovered that those with the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids, were not any less likely to have breast cancer.

There is increasing evidence about the damaging effects of trans fat. I posted previously about it being linked to coronary heart disease. New York and California have even banned trans fat in restaurant foods. I am surprised that the omega-3 fatty acids did not help; however, it cannot counteract the negative effects of the trans fat. The only clear solution is to avoid trans fats completely.
