Continued Aerobic Exercise May Postpone Aging By Up To 12 Years

A British study has shown that those who maintain aerobic exercise may postpone aging by up to 12 years.

Aerobic exercise improves the body’s oxygen consumption and its use in generating energy (metabolism). A continual degeneration of aerobic power begins in middle age, decreasing about 5 ml (kg. min) every decade. When maximal aerobic power falls below about 18 ml in men and 15 ml in women, it is difficult to perform any activity without experiencing major fatigue. A typical sedentary man has a maximal aerobic power of about 25 ml, which is about half of what it was at 20 years old.

Research has shown that a long period of relatively high-intensity aerobic exercise can increase maximal aerobic power by 25%, which equals 10 to 12 biological years.

Dr. Roy Shephard, lead author of the study and professor at the University of Toronto, says that “There seems good evidence that the conservation of maximal oxygen intake increases the likelihood that the healthy elderly person will retain functional independence.”

It has also been shown that aerobic exercise reduces the risk of serious disease and promotes faster recovery after injury or illness.

I would like to see future research on this, but it certainly gives motivation to continue to make aerobic exercise a part of my life. I typically do aerobic exercise 3 to 4 times per week. It is not my favorite form of exercise (I prefer weight lifting); however, I know the importance of it (especially now).

If that isn’t motivation for getting your cardio in, I don’t know what is! :)

You mentioned you like weight lifting better – I enjoy cardio and strength training but even though I enjoy them, I still have to push myself to get it done. I always feel better afterwards, though.

This is definitely great motivation to do your cardio. I agree that I always feel better after a workout. I have never gone to the gym and then regretted going. It’s funny that I still try to talk myself out of it sometimes.

Useful information there. Aerobics has helped me out tremendously. And I’ve been continuing it for the past 6 years. It never has failed me. As a standard routine aerobics combined with the perfect diet can just be the thing you need to cut down the excess fat. Anyway nice article. Thanks

That is a great motivation for the people who still don’t have enough strong will to start their trainings. When they find out it can slow down the ageing process so massively they will probably think of exercises.
