Freshman 15 Myth Now Busted

Research has shown that the infamous “freshman 15” should more accurately be called the “freshman 5”.

The research was led by Dr. Sareen Gropper, an Auburn University professor, who has stated that she has always thought that the “freshman 15” was a myth.

The researchers examined 36 freshman female undergraduates. The participants were weighed at the start of the year and again at the end of the fall and spring semesters. The women gained an average of 1.9 pounds during the first semester and 4.8 pounds during the whole freshman year.

They are now studying over 200 freshman students. The men that were studied gained an average of 5.4 pounds compared to 3.2 pounds for women.

Most of the freshman (71.4 percent) gained weight during their first year of college, but only 21 percent gained 5 or more pounds.

It looks like this myth is now busted. I remember losing weight during my freshman year, but that was due to some new friends that were into running. Everyone’s college experience is different, but it is interesting to note that most people do not gain as much weight as previously thought.
