Endorphins Not Only Make You Feel Good, But May Also Protect Your Heart
Research at the University of Iowa suggests that opioids, which include endorphins and other morphine-like substances that are released during exercise, may protect from heart attacks.
It has been known for a long time now that the good feeling one gets from exercise, sometimes also called “runner’s high”, is caused by natural opioids released during exercise.
The University of Iowa researchers used rats to show that by blocking the receptors that bind opioids the cardiovascular benefits of exercise were eliminated. The researchers also showed that exercise was involved with increased expression of several genes linked to opioid pathways that protect the heart.

I nearly always feel better after a workout, and it is nice to know that this feeling may also be protecting my heart.

Mike, sounds logical to me, given that the endorphins from exercising have such a positive effect. Now, I just need to do more exercise and get more of such benefits.

Good Ol’ endorphins. I’ve been aware of their relative worth but before this post was not aware of the connection to cardio…Interesting and certainly makes sense!!
