Carbohydrates and Obesity May Be Linked to Esophageal Cancer

Researchers may have found a link between increased carbohydrate consumption and obesity and the increasing number of esophageal cancer cases in the US. The causes of esophageal cancer are mostly unknown, and patients have a poor prognosis.

Cases of esophageal cancer have increased from 300,000 in 1973 to 2.1 million in 2001. These numbers closely match increases in carbohydrate consumption and obesity over the same time.

The researchers note that diets high in refined carbohydrates typically leads to obesity and that obesity is a major risk factor for several types of cancer. The researchers did say that none of the others nutrients that were studied were linked to esophageal cancer rates.

The rate of increase of esophageal cancer is shocking, and this study give more evidence against a high carbohydrate diet. I try to eat a high-protein diet and limit refined carbohydrates.
