Broccoli Sprout Extract Shown to Help Prevent Bladder Cancer

Research at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute has shown that cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, are linked to a reduced risk of bladder cancer.

It has been shown in the past that the protective action of cruciferous vegetables comes in part from isothyiocyanates (ITCs), which are a group of phytochemicals that have recognized cancer preventive actions. Vegetables that contain ITCs include mature broccoli, cabbage, kale, and collard greens. However, broccoli sprouts have nearly 30 times more ITCs than mature broccoli, and the sprout extract used for the research has nearly 600 times as much.

The researchers used the broccoli sprout extract to test its capability to prevent bladder tumors in rats. The group given the high dose of extract reduced the development of bladder tumors by more than 50%, and most of the tumors that developed were very small in size. The researchers speculate that lower doses of ITCs would be required in humans for sufficient bladder cancer prevention.

I think the take home message here is to eat your vegetables. The health benefits of vegetables like broccoli are many, and I need to eat more of it. I have steamed broccoli every once in a while, but I should try to have it more often. I have only tried kale and collard greens a couple of times, and I didn’t care much for it. However, if prepared right, I may like them.

Interesting post, thanks for the great information. Now off to the grocery store . . .

Thanks for the comment. I just wish that I craved vegetables more often. I get my fair share, but sometimes I have to force them down.
