Meat, Fried Foods, And Diet Soda Linked to Metabolic Syndrome

Researchers at the University of Minnesota have shown that adults who eat too much meat, fried foods, and diet soda increase their risk of developing metabolic syndrome by 25%. Metabolic syndrome is a group of cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk factors including larger waist size, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and high fasting glucose levels. Interestingly, dairy products were shown to protect against metabolic syndrome.

The study did not research how each of these foods were involved with increased risk of metabolic syndrome, but the researchers believe that saturated fats are to blame.

The fried food is a little obvious, but I did not expect the meat and diet soda. I do remember reading that diet soda can cause overeating due to not getting the sugars that one would expect from a soda – people then crave sugar more strongly. As for the meat, I would imagine that foods like hamburgers and bacon were the culprit. I doubt that meats such as fish and chicken (both un-fried) would cause such problems.

[...] This is interesting and some good motivation for men to stay away from sodas and other drinks containing high amounts of fructose. It certainly is not healthy for women, either, and I think should be avoided whenever possible. Day one starts now. I knew I had put on weight…but I took the leap and got on the scale today (with the wife out of town)…Like she didn’t know? I’ve never seen the numbers that I saw today….even when I played football. I know I need to stop with the diet pop…but I’m pretty sure it’s not the only culprit! Help!

Try removing the diet sodas from your diet slowly and replace it with something healthier. I really like green tea, but that would probably be a tough leap. If its the carbonation that you crave, try flavored seltzer water. Crystal Light is a great tasting drink, and would be a good replacement for diet sodas. However, I would only recommend this as a temporary solution, because I’m not so sure about the artificial sweeteners. You ultimate goal should be to drink only water and tea (not sweet tea, though). Try eliminating one can of soda a day for the first week and then removing more as the weeks go on.

As for the diet, I would recommend a high-protein, low-carb, low-fat diet as I mentioned previously here. This doesn’t give details on the diet, but I would recommend a book called The Metabolism Advantage by John Berardi. This guy really knows his stuff. He also sells a complete nutrition package called Precision Nutrition, which would be much more detailed than the book. His book also contains a great workout program that should get you started on the right track.

I hope this response helps. I know you can do it if you just take it one day at a time and stay positive. Good luck!

Thanks Mike I kind of know what I need to do (wife’s a huge dieter). At one point 2 years ago I was drinking more than 10 glasses of Green Tea. Man that stuff’s gross! Need to get back to water and low fat eating but with the new job and a 150 mile round trip commute everyday I think I let myself go (and not in the I’ll get 2 burritos for a buck kind of way either). Take the lunch, don’t eat out but I’ve grown another person in me and it needs to stop. We used to do a 5 mile walk everyday too but it always seems to be heaven or hell with us…we either do it all right, or ALL wrong. Right now, we aint right…LOL I’ll stay tuned here for some encouragement! Glad I found ya.

Great information you offer. This is stuff for me to consider later down the road.

Tommy, I know how you feel. I have had the all or nothing problem before, and it is tough to break out of it. Just remember not to beat yourself up if you make mistakes with your diet. Pick up where you left off and keep going.

Marlowjust, thanks for the comment. I hope to help any way that I can.
