Top Fitness Trends for 2008

In November of 2007 the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) released the results of their second annual Fitness Trends survey. This survey was designed to reveal trends in commercial, corporate, clinical, and community fitness program environments. The potential trends were scored by experts from all over the world, including Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, North America, and South America. The response in 2007 was nearly double that of the previous year.

The top 20 trends are as follows:

  1. Educated and experienced fitness professionals.
  2. Exercise programs for children to fight childhood and adolescent obesity.
  3. Personal training
  4. Strength training
  5. Core training
  6. Special fitness programs for older adults
  7. Pilates
  8. Functional fitness
  9. Swiss ball
  10. Yoga
  11. Exercise and weight loss
  12. Spinning (indoor cycling)
  13. Sport-specific training
  14. Balance training
  15. Group personal training
  16. Outcome measurements
  17. Comprehensive health programming at the worksite
  18. Reaching new markets
  19. Worker incentive programs
  20. Wellness coaching

Interestingly, the top three trends were separated by only 0.02 points when averaged. The second (fitness programs for children), third (personal training), and sixth (fitness programs for older adults) trends suggest that health professionals will be in very high demand for all ages.

Interesting list although I had tought the exercise programs for children to fight childhood and adolescent obesity would be first. Lots of work for me as a personal trainer.
