Sugary Drinks May Lead to Weight Gain

This should not come as a surprise to anyone, but there appears to be a relationship between consuming sugar-sweetened beverages, such as sodas and other carbonated beverages, and insulin resistance, a precursor to Type 2 diabetes.

Nutritional epidemiologists at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (USDA HNRCA) at Tufts University performed a study on 2500 men and women.

According to Paul Jacques, DSc, director of the Nutritional Epidemiology Program at the USDA HNRCA and professor at Tufts, those who consumed two or more sugar-sweetened beverages per day had much higher fasting blood levels of insulin than those who did not consume such beverages.

In this study, consumption of 100% fruit juice was not significantly related to insulin resistance.

The CDC has an excellent article that cites several studies. They report that a large fraction of added sugar in the American diet comes from the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Several of the cited studies report that consumption of these beverages leads to weight gain.
