Tips for Setting New Years Resolutions
Weight loss is one of the most common resolutions. Unfortunately, most people will start off with a bang and then burn out quickly. This post will offer some tips to help make good resolutions and to stick with them throughout the year.
The key to successful resolutions is setting goals that are realistic and attainable. If you set goals with the primary focus on outcomes, frustration is more likely. Instead, focus on what you are currently doing to achieve your goals, and reward yourself for your successes. Success builds further success.
First, make sure to get your doctor’s permission before starting an exercise program. He or she can help make sure that you have a safe diet and exercise plan and may make some helpful modifications.
The following are some tips that you will hopefully find helpful:
- Avoid perfectionist thinking. It is much better to think positive than to focus on how much we fall short of our goals. View setbacks as lessons and learn from them.
- Don’t make absolute resolutions. Keep them realistic. For example, don’t make a resolution to not eat pizza for the entire year. Instead, make a resolution to eat it less and have fewer pieces when you do eat pizza.
- Don’t keep resolutions to yourself. Tell someone you trust about your resolutions. Find a support network (family, friends, and co-workers) to help encourage you and keep you on-track. Try to find a workout partner to help keep your exercise intensity up and help prevent missing workouts. It’s much more difficult to skip a workout when a friend or family member is waiting for you at the gym.
- Give them meaning. Your goal should be something you really desire to change or achieve. Don’t make resolutions on what your friends and family would like you to do. Think about what you would really like to achieve this year.
- Start slowly but get started right away. Don’t wait for inspiration to strike. Take action first and the inspiration will follow. For example, start slowly with the exercise. Begin by going for a 10 minute walk or with a quick weight lifting session with light weights. You will pick up motivation fast. For your diet, start by cutting sodas and high-calorie fruit drinks. Instead drink water or tea.
I hope this helps and I wish everyone the best of health for the New Year.
Happy New Years.
