Green tea – “Asian Paradox”

Green tea, known by some as the “Asian Paradox”, may reduce cardiovascular disease and cancer. Even though Asians consume more cigarettes than most other countries, they have lower incidences of cardiovascular disease and cancer. This may be linked to their high consumption of tea, particularly green tea. On average, people in Asia consume 1.2 liters (5 cups) of green tea per day.

Green tea contains the anti-oxidant polyphenolic epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which may prevent LDL oxidation. The names of these antioxidants are often shortened to catechins. EGCG reduces the amount of platelet aggregation, regulates lipids, and promotes proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells. These are all factors in reducing cardiovascular disease.

The antioxidants found in green tea have also been touted to improve gastrointestinal function, alcohol metabolism, kidney, liver, and pancreatic function, protect skin and eyes, and alleviate arthritis. Teas has also been used to mange and prevent allergies, diabetes, bacterial and viral infections, cavities, and improve neurological and psychological health.

The human body constantly produces unstable molecules called oxidants, which are often referred to as free radicals. To become stable, oxidants steal electrons from other molecules and, in the process, damages cell proteins and genetic material. This damage may leave the cell vulnerable to cancer. Antioxidants hunt for and seize oxidants.

All varieties of tea (white, green, oolong, and black) come from the leaves of a single evergreen plant, Camellia sinensis. Green tea contains higher levels of antioxidants than black tea due to a lower level of processing. Black tea is produced by allowing the leaves to ferment and oxidized.

Laboratory studies have shown the catechins in tea to inhibit cancer growth in several ways:

Unfortunately, studies involving humans have been conflicting. One study in Chine that involved over 18,000 men found that tea drinkers were nearly half as likely to develop stomach or esophageal cancer as men who drank little tea, even after adjusting for smoking and other health and diet factors. A study at the Beijing Dental Hospital found consuming 3 grams of tea a day, which is about two cups, along with the application of tea extract reduced the size and propagation of leukoplakia, a pre-cancerous oral plaque.

However, a study in the Netherlands did not support these findings. The study involved 58,279 men and 62,573 women between the ages of 55 and 69. No link between tea consumption and cancer protection was found.

I personally feel better when I consume green tea on a daily basis. At first I did not like the taste, but I quickly began to like it. Green tea does contain caffeine, but only about a quarter of what is found in coffee. At one point I drank about 3 cups a day, and I did suffer from some withdrawals for a couple of days when I stopped consuming it. I now have a cup every couple of days and plan to start consuming one cup per day.

Resveratrol can help you to lead a long and healthy life so says Dr. Oz. I think resveratrol is better than green tea.
Have you tried resveratrol?
Resveratrol Supplements can help you control your weight naturally
by increasing energy, reducing cravings, and limiting your appetite.
According to Wikipedia, Consumer Lab, an independent dietary
supplement and over the counter products evaluation organization,
published a report on 13 November 2007 on the popular resveratrol
supplements. The organization reported that there exists a wide range
in quality, dose, and price among the 13 resveratrol products
evaluated. The actual amount of resveratrol contained in the
different brands range from 2.2mg for Revatrol, which claimed to have
400mg of “Red Wine Grape Complex”, to 500mg for Biotivia.com Transmax,
which is consistent with the amount claimed on the product’s label.
Prices per 100mg of resveratrol ranged from less than $.30 for
products made by Biotivia.com, jarrow, and country life, to a high of
$45.27 for the Revatrol brand. None of the products tested were found
to have significant levels of heavy metals or other contaminants.

Green Tea is definately a healthy drink and something that is perfect for weight loss when used alongside a healthy diet. The myth that there is less caffeine in green tea than coffee should be dispelled though, as there is actually more.
